PlayStation 3 gets 3D Blu-ray support with 3.50 firmware upgrade

Posted by Hassan Saif on October 8, 2010

The PlayStation 3 has been promising to be one of the most useful purchases for someone interested in starting out with 3D television. First, the system got a firmware upgrade to enable playing 3D games on TVs capable of handling the effect. Now, with firmware 3.50, the console finally gains the ability to play 3D movies as well.

In order to watch 3D movies with your PS3, you’ll need a 3D-ready TV, shutter glasses for each viewer, and an HDMI connection between the console and your display. Sony acknowledges that there may be some issues with 3D and Blu-ray supplemental content, such as Java-based features, and that the 3D versions of on-screen menus may not look the same as with other 3D Blu-ray players.

In addition to the 3D movie upgrade, firmware 3.50 adds some social networking options, including accessing profile information through Facebook-aware games and the ability to report users on the PlayStation Network who may be harassing you. The free update is available now from Sony.
